The Many Uses Of The CMS Pulse Oximeters

By Eloise Hewitt

The oximeter is a vital instrument in hospitals because it is used to monitor the levels of oxygen in the blood of people suffering from chronic diseases. In a normal human being, the level of oxygen in the blood is usually between 95 and 98% so when the levels fall below that the doctor knows there are problems. The CMS pulse oximeters can save lives even when used in the home setting.

The reason why the instrument is better than other means of measuring is because it is not intrusive. When you use it, it is attached to a narrow part of the body such as a finger. This helps the patient to feel comfortable carrying it with him all through the day. It is then attached to the monitors so that every doctor who enters the room can be able to read the values quickly and with no trouble.

There are other ways of measuring the oxygen level and some doctors will use them if they do not have the facilities of the modern instruments. You can use an instrument to take out blood from the patient with the use of needles. This is okay, but it is not the most convenient since you will have to visit the lab for the results.

The oximeter is crucial during intensive care since it is attached to the multi-parameter monitor. This way the readings are seen from afar and the doctors can monitor the patient well. This way they will know when they are having breathing difficulties. You have to make sure that the instrument is attached since this will be more convenient than the patient being asked for blood every now and then.

Another place that the device is used is during surgery. The procedures will normally cause the patient to have unstable oxygen levels in the blood. The indicators will help them to know when the levels are going too low. This device cannot however be used to determine if the oxygen is being used up in the body or not.

People suffering from sleep disorders such as apnea and hypopnea will also have these devices attached to their monitors. This is because they will normally hyperventilate and the system will indicate when this is happening. This will prevent them from dying when in deep sleep or having fits. This device is crucial in emergency medicine since it determines whether to use the ventilator machines or not to help the patient.

People who work at great heights may also use the device to determine when to use portable oxygen. This is in case of pilots who work at great heights when they are doing their duties. People who do mountain climbing may also find these devices handy for their work. This can save their lives since they might not know they are getting too little air otherwise.

In the home setting, if you have a loved one with a pulmonary disease like asthma and some heart conditions you must have the device. It will come in handy in knowing when they are not in very good condition. Having such a device can save their lives because it will help in case of emergencies.
